Hello, we are Christof and Monika from Dresden and we would like to tell you about our son Jonathan and about all the things we have experienced with him through the grace of God.

Already during pregnancy the doctors stated after undertaking special check-ups, our baby will have a disease called “left ventricular hypoplasia” (‘hypoplastisches Linksherzsyndrom’) – Ask us if you want to know more about it! The doctor said this is one of the worst heart diseases that exists. All the children diagnosed with this syndrome usually die shortly after being born. The doctor said we now had three options: 1) to abort the pregnancy 2) to let him die after birth 3) to choose the option of having operations, meaning the child would have at least three operations in the following years. All the operations, especially the first, are very risky and he could die. The operations would not heal him, but would allow him to live for a few more years. He would always remain chronically sick, but he could live.

That wasn’t nice to hear. We brought our thoughts and fears to God, and we related these news to our assembly and then everyone started praying in the Name of Jesus for a creative miracle to occur, otherwise we would take the course of operations.

Someone told me to read the booklet “There is a Miracle in Your Mouth” which contains a story about a very sick child and it stirred me up. There I read: You have to find your promises, confess them and God will make His Word come to pass. I put all the promises from the Bible together, some of which were passed on to me by others in letters I had received, and those that God had shown me at different times. The scriptures (some are very alike) reminded me of a circle. One leads to another and they all match perfectly. During the pregnancy the Lord helped and comforted us and He really was our strength as He says in PSALM 68:19 “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.”

After the birth the doctors stated he was in good condition. On the seventh day of his life he had his first operation. After an operation like this, 50 percent of all babies usually die because it is very hard for the body to cope with the operation. All the assemblies were praying for him during this time and also during the other operations and whenever some difficulties arose. The Lord protected him during this operation. He only had a few complications and most were not very difficult ones. Whenever they occurred we prayed and the Lord answered, showing that He is Lord above all – for instance, when he got a pneumothorax. The doctors were stunned that Jonathan was still in good condition. They only increased the artificial respiration. Within just 24 hours – a time of persisting prayer – the pneumothorax had completely vanished. The doctor said that other children experiencing this complication might reach a serious condition within a very short time. One week after the operation, another child diagnosed with the same syndrome died shortly after undergoing the very same operation. That was a sad time, also very sobering and once more I recognised that all life is from God, given by His grace.

When Jonathan was about three weeks old, we could leave the hospital. He then developed well. The doctors were stunned to see him in such good health, physically and mentally, even while he was still in the intensive ward. All this is not normally granted to children with such serious heart diseases.

He had to undergo his second operation when he was about four months old. The operation went well, he recovered and only needed oxygen support occasionally. There was not a time from this day onward that he needed the oxygen support. The doctors couldn’t find a reason for this. They said if this continued and he was otherwise well, they would release us from hospital, with a bottle of oxygen, oxygen glasses and a little device to always check the level of oxygen in his blood. At first this was a bit of a shock for me. I sought the scriptures, which I had gathered, so that God could give faith. We all prayed God would manifest Himself. Whenever somebody asked me how Jonathan was, I said – with faith in God’s Word – we would go home without oxygen. A check-up proved Jonathan’s heart to be working well, without any problems. The following day the level of oxygen in his blood suddenly increased up to 88% and it stayed there. A few days later we left the hospital, oxygen level still at this increased stage, although it was so low before the operation and therefore the doctors had stated it was unlikely to rise to the level we wanted it to be (85-90%). The year following this operation, he had an oxygen level of 90%.

At the age of three he had his third operation, which also went well, though it was not easy. Afterwards he had diaphragmatic paralysis (paralysis of the phrenic nerve) (Zwerchfellähmung), nearly had pneumonia and several effusions of blood. The Lord had not forgotten or forsaken him though! For instance he needed no regular treatment with painkillers after receiving prayer, though this had been a necessity beforehand.

After six weeks we could leave the hospital and saw him recovering. Time and again we saw God answering the prayers for Jonathan and doing miracles. His Word was always there to give faith.

At present I have nearly two pages of scriptures that have helped during this time. God made His Word alive to give us strength and faith. Praise the Lord for all His Love toward us and THANK YOU ALL for your prayers and that you are with us.

At the moment we are in the hospital again and our trust is in God. He is the Creator and giver of all life. And He is the one who will manifest a newly created heart in our son.
